The Port Authority of Melilla (APM) is the public body with legal personality and its own assets responsible from managing both the Port of Melilla and Chafarinas and whose attributions and functioning are regulated by the Law of State Ports and Merchant Marine. The APM is dedicated especially to the traffic of goods, being essentially a receiving port, the traffic of passengers and vehicles and sportive acitivities.

The geographical location of the Port of Melilla is a source of important opportunities and challenges as it is located at the eastern part of Cabo Tres Forcas, in a privileged geographical situation, at the eastern end of the Strait of Gibraltar. The Estrecho area is one of the most important maritime route in the world, a strategic area at the international shipping and a logistic platform in southern Europe. It´s estimated that more than 10% of international shipping traffic flows throught its waters annually. Therefore the Port of Melilla has a strategic location in relation to its potential capacity to serve the markets in the Western Mediterranean, North Africa and the rest of Europe.

Melilla Port Authority´s strategy responds to environmental challenges with a business development model based on the promotion of increased traffic activity, the development of works to improve and expand its facilities and the development of an integrated strategy of quality, safety and environments, which is emerging as fundamental differentiation axis.

Therefore, aware of its environmental responsibilities and of all those acquired in the conservation of the Patella ferruginea, a specie in danger of extinction and which has an important population in the outer breakwater of the Port, has been working in the study of the same through several agreements and contracts with different Universities and advisors of the Working Group which coordinates the implementation of the Strategy of conservation of the  lapa ferruginea, being LIFE REMOPAF the last project that in a direct way is working and hopeful In which its results will help in the future to repopulate those areas that originally had Patella ferruginea and that by diverse circumstances, today its population has diminished considerably or even disappeared.
